Balinese civilization is a civilization that relies on characters, spells and literature. Script and mantra become the focal point of Balinese religious rites, while literature is a spring that never dries up for the creation of various forms of Balinese art. The important role of literature lies not only in its ability to be a medium for expressing beauty, but also in its ability to be a medium for recording, storing, and disseminating noble values, moral teachings, and local wisdom which are important guidelines in the journey of Balinese people to become a better human being.

This was conveyed by  Governor Bali  Wayan Koster in his remarks when opening the International Seminar of Indonesian Literature in Bali 2019 at the Ksirarnawa Building, Denpasar, Friday (11 October 2019).

The Governor said, the word "Nyastra" in Bali was not merely meant as a creative activity to create literary works. "Literature" is also a continuous effort to use literature as a tool to train and forge oneself to become the main human being, a bright human being physically and spiritually, a human who has realized his true identity.

"" Literature "is also an endless journey to realize noble values, moral teachings, and local wisdom contained in literary works into concrete actions in daily life," said Chairman of DPD PDIP Bali Province this.

Borrowing the term of one of the biggest Kawi-Wiku (literary priests) in the history of Bali, Ida Pedanda Made Sidemen, in his work, Geguritan Selampah Laku, the Governor said farming in himself was a beautiful metaphor for "Literature". According to him, the body and soul must be treated as rice fields that must be plowed and cared for, then the seeds of letters, spells, and literature will flourish noble values, moral and ethical strength, and local wisdom.

"The end result is a bright Main Man who is able to enlighten his community," said the husband of artist Ni Putu Putri Suastini Koster who was also present at the opening of the seminar.

The Governor said that the holding of this year's International Indonesian Literature Seminar was in line with the vision of the Regional Development of Bali 2018-2023, namely: Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali through the Pattern of Universe Planning, towards Bali New Era. In line with this vision, the International Seminar on Indonesian Literature raised the theme "Literature, Environment, and Us" which specifically paid attention to how literature can affect the way of viewing and how humans act in relation to nature.

"We hope that this International Literature Seminar in Indonesia will give birth to useful thoughts and insights on how literature and" literature "are able to encourage the birth of key human beings whose thoughts, words and actions are always directed towards the achievement of Tri Hita Karana and Sad Kerthi," he hoped.
