DENPASAR, Balitopnews.com - Chairperson of TP PKK Bali Province  Putri Suastini Koster attended the 'Orchid Competition and Ornamental Plant Exchange' which was held at Duta Orchid Garden Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai Tohpati Denpasar, Friday, October 30 2020.

In addition to appreciating the implementation of the Orchid Contest and the Ornamental Plant Exchange, Putri Koster also wants a special event to showcase Balinese orchids.

Putri Koster conveyed that the activity initiated by Duta Orchid Garden in the midst of this pandemic was a good start to revive the orchid and ornamental plant business.

"We have been asleep for a long time because of the pandemic. It's time for us to wake up from sleep, stretch again. This is one of the activities that marks the awakening, especially in the cultivation of orchids and ornamental plants," She said.

She added that the development of orchids and ornamental plants has many positive benefits. Apart from being a medium for channeling hobbies, gardening activities for orchids and ornamental plants is an important part of environmental conservation efforts. "One more thing that is no less important, the business prospects are also promising because tourism needs orchids and ornamental plants," She added.

Given her promising business opportunities, she invited the public to spend time visiting the exhibition locations. "Let us grow our love for orchids and ornamental plants. After growing love. Over time it will become a business opportunity," She added.

In a conversation with orchid hobbyists, the wife of the number one person in Bali came up with the idea of a Balinese orchid exhibition. She said that when she was little she knew several types of orchids with Balinese names such as the cicing orchid and toke orchid.

"I want a special exhibition for Balinese orchids, to generate local wisdom," She said while hoping that the development of orchids and ornamental plants in Bali can be managed from upstream to downstream. In that sense, the provision of seeds to the cultivation process can be carried out entirely in Bali.

Meanwhile, the owner of Duta Orchid Ni Wayan Srilaba explained that this activity was held to revive the orchid business that was slumped in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Srilaba said, the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the tourism sector had a huge impact on the orchid business. The closure of tourism accommodation such as hotels and restaurants has made the demand for orchids and ornamental plants decreased by 80 percent. However, she does not want to continue to fall and try to make efforts to revive the orchid business on the Island of the God. "We facilitate orchid farmers to get them excited again," She said while conveying that Duta Orchid currently collects 300 types of orchids and 1/5 of them are local Balinese species.

Chairperson of the Jury for Orchid Competition Ramadani Prasetya added that orchid competitions are generally divided into two major classes, namely hybrids and natural species. If divided more specifically, the competition class can reach 50 to 60 classes.

"Due to the pandemic situation, we cannot compete for many classes. This time only 6 classes were contested, the participants were also only from the Bali region," He explained.

He added that the competition aims to revive the Bali Branch of the Orchid Association which has been suspended from a pandemic. He, who happens to be sitting in the central management, is looking for a way to get orchid lovers in Bali back to life. One of the efforts being made is to collaborate with ornamental plant lovers who are currently booming.

"We are holding ornamental plants so that orchids are also uplifted," he explained.

The orchid competition that wins a total prize of IDR 3,000,000 is coupled with a workshop that will take place on 31 October 2020 and an orchid auction on 1 November 2020. People who want to pamper their eyes to see the beauty of orchids and ornamental plants can visit Duta Orchid. (Gix)
