BADUNG, Balitopnews.com - The Acting Governor of Bali, S.M. Mahendra Jaya appreciates the central government's attention regarding handling consigned waste which has recently been seen piling up in the Kuta Beach area and its surroundings. "I really appreciate the central government's attention regarding the waste problem in Bali. Thank you for coming directly, Mr. and Mrs. Minister," The Acting Governor of Bali Mahendra Jaya said at a clean-up event at Kuta Beach, Badung, Bali, Saturday (January 4, 2025).
The Acting Governor explained that the accumulation of trash on Kuta Beach and its surroundings is a seasonal phenomenon where sea currents passing through the coastal area bring trash from outside Bali, especially from the island of Java. "Therefore, we continue to encourage trash management efforts that also involve the community," he said.
Mahendra Jaya stated that Bali actually already has regulations regarding trash handling, namely source-based trash handling. "So, we encourage trash processing at the source, trash is processed at the household scale up to the village level. Several villages have succeeded in doing this and continue to provide examples in other villages in Bali," Mahendra Jaya said. The presence of the ministers in the action to clean up trash on Kuta Beach, will provide further encouragement and enthusiasm for the local government and the community to solve the trash problem on the Island of the Gods as a whole. "Once again I would like to thank you for your support to continue to encourage efforts to handle waste. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Minister who care about the preservation and natural beauty of Bali," The Acting Governor of Bali said. On the same occasion, the Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, said that the problem of shipped waste in Bali is of concern to the central government because apart from having the potential to disrupt tourism activities, it can also have a direct impact on the environment and food. "Imagine if left unchecked, there could be more trash in the sea than fish. Of course this will disrupt the availability of our fishery materials in the future," Minister Zulkifli said.
The Coordinating Minister for Food also stated the importance of cooperation and collaboration between the central government, regional governments and components of society to jointly maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability. "We are a very large archipelagic country, so the key is that we have to work together to protect our environment," he said. The Minister of the Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, explained that the waste sent to the Kuta Beach area and its surroundings occurs during the west monsoon season which takes place in the October-March period every year. "The amount of waste sent to the coast of Bali in 2024-2025 is estimated to be higher than in 2020-2021, which reached around 6,000 tons, while in 2023 it will be around 2,900 tons," he explained. Therefore, according to the Indonesian Minister of Environment, it is important to collaborate to deal with 'seasonal' trash on Bali's beaches in a concrete manner through the cooperation of various stakeholders, both government and society. "Moreover, Bali has a reputation for international tourism and there is also a need for more massive education for the community to work together to maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability," Minister Hanif said.
A total of 2,115 participants, ranging from local government, TNI, Polri, students, Bali Poltekpar students, communities, cleaning workers, Kuta Task Force, traditional villages, NGOs, as well as mass media and social media activists were also involved in the clean-up action even though they had time to drenched in rain. This activity was also combined with the signing of an MoU between the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Indonesian Ministry of Basic Education for educational efforts on waste management and environmental sustainability from school age. Also attending the event were the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, and the Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana.
The activity of cleaning up the consigned trash was also attended by Deputy Minister of the Environment Diaz Hendropriyono, Special Presidential Envoy for Tourism Zita Anjani, The Regent of Badung I Nyoman Giri Prasta, Pangdam IX/Udayana, Bali Regional Police, Korem 163/Wirasatya, and representatives of the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
